ROCHDALE have earned a home tie with Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

They progressed in the competition after a 1-0 away win at Championship side Huddersfield in the first round.

Skipper Eoghan O’Connell’s header shortly after the break at the John Smith Stadium was enough to see Brian Barry-Murphy’s side through.

Speaking after the win the Rochdale manager said: “It was a great start to the season. The lads gave everything we asked and we believed in ourselves.

“We were going into uncharted waters in the second half physically. It took a lot out of our guys, but that’s the nature of the game.

“Our set-pieces were poor last season and we have worked hard to improve that – it is good to get our reward for that work over the last two weeks.”

Second-round ties will take place on the week commencing September 14. Wednesday are previous winners of the competition, lifting the trophy back in 1991.

If Rochdale can overcome their second Championship opponents, they will face a trip to the winner of the Ipswich v Fulham tie in the third round.
