People across Bolton are being urged to find out more about being a foster carer and the rewarding opportunities it offers.

The call comes during Foster Care Fortnight (11-24 May), the UK’s biggest foster care awareness raising campaign, showcasing the commitment, passion and dedication of foster carers.

Bolton Council says it is welcoming applicants who may be looking to change career paths, or who may have considered fostering in the past but not taken the initial step.

A foster carer can be anyone aged 21 and over, who can provide children with a stable environment. Carers can be single or in a couple and do not need to own their own home.

Foster carers are paid, and placements can vary from overnight stays to several years.

As well as the financial support, foster carers receive extensive training, a locally based supervising social worker, out of hours support and an experienced foster carer “buddy”.

There are three ways to make an initial enquiry and find out more:

·          Complete an online form 24/7 at www.bolton.gov.uk/fostering

·         Call using the freephone number 0800 107 1564

·          Send an email to fostering@bolton.gov.uk

Anne Galloway, Bolton Council’s executive cabinet member for children’s services, said: “Fostering is a rewarding full-time career that offers a wonderful opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of young people.

“Now more than ever, some of the most vulnerable children in our community need a safe and supportive environment.

“I urge as many people as possible to take the time to find out more and see if fostering could be right for you.

“We are extremely grateful to all our foster carers who do a fantastic job dedicating their time to improving the lives of the children and young people they care for.

“We understand that taking that first step can feel like a big decision, but our staff are on hand to answer your questions and help you understand if fostering is right for you and your family.”
