Planning applications have been submitted for two of three new projects earmarked for delivery on brownfield sites. If approved Chorley Council hopes to be able to start work ons- ite towards the end of this year. The first application proposes the delivery of a mixed-use scheme with a new civic square situated in front of the historic town hall. The square will become a new destina- tion in Chorley town centre providing space for events and pub- lic enjoyment. The scheme will also incorporate 31 residen- tial apartments with approximately 7,500 sq ft of new commercial space and around 9,000 sq ft of office space, with public parking provision as well as new planting and green spaces. The second appli- cation proposes the redevelopment of the council’s current depot on Bengal Street, mak- ing sustainable use of an underutilised brownfield site to deliver town cen- tre housing. The scheme consists of 62 high-quality, energy efficient homes and includes 52 apartments and 10 townhouses with 72 car parking spaces and a landscaped gar- den area. The depot will Preservation plan for Two Lads PLANS to refurbish the famous Two Lads cairns near Winter Hill have been revealed byTheWoodlandTrust. The iconic stone landmarks are a popular destination for walkers and ramblers but have been the target of vandals. Now the trust, which manages the Smithills Estate, has unveiled proposals to restore and preserve them. They also warned that if health and safety issues were not addressed the cairns could be removed. A series of community design meetings have been held at Horwich Community Centre, Smithills Hall and online to share the plans and the opin- ions of local people. A trust spokesperson said: “We are planning to restore Two Lads securely to deter vandalism and make the mon- ument safer for visitors.” Town centre revamp ramps up The council is talking to the NHS to determine the range of health ser- vices that could be deliv- ered from a proposed new health hub. The planning appli- cations follow a public consultation where more than 70 per cent of partic- ipants expressed overall support for the plans. Council leader Alistair Bradley said: “This once in a lifetime investment will make sure that Chorley town centre can continue to thrive and be enjoyed for generations to come. “Our expert team has worked hard to arrive at a highly efficient and deliv- erable design programme, based on feedback from our residents.” New look: An artist’s impression of the regeneration projects (Photo credit: Chorley Council) be relocating to Common Bank Industrial Estate. A third project which forms a part of the £44m investment includes the refurbishment of the coun- cil’s Union Street offices where work is underway to provide up to 20,000 sq ft of modern commer- cial accommodation.
