They were joined by govern- ment ministers and members of the community. The Conser- vative council leader was hailed for his tireless campaigning for the borough and his work during the Covid-19 pandemic. A ward councillor for Brom- ley Cross since 2006, Councillor Greenhalgh was elected as bor- ough leader in 2019. Throughout the pandemic he had led Bolton through its challenging times and response to the virus, speaking out na- tionally on issues such as local lockdowns and the Scottish government’s decision to re- strict travel to the borough. Tributes poured in follow- ing the sad news. Government housing secretary Robert Jen- rick said: “I’m deeply saddened to hear of David Greenhal- gh’s death. “David was a tireless cam- paigner and champion for Bolton, never more so than during the pandemic. He was kind, generous and a true public servant. He will be sore- ly missed.” Bolton South East Labour MP Yasmin Qureshi said: “De- spite our political differences, he was clearly driven by pub- lic service and a drive to make Bolton a better place. “He led the borough through one of the most challenging pe- riods of history and everyone in Bolton is indebted for his work. My heart goes out to his family during this difficult time.” In a joint statement Bolton council’s deputy leader Martyn Cox and chief executive Tony Oakman said: “As an individ- ual he will be greatly missed by many, and it will take some time to come to terms with our sudden loss.” Bolton North East Conserva- tive MP Mark Logan said sim- ply: “Bromley Cross and Bolton had “lost its greatest son.” He joined Bolton councillors and friends in laying flowers at Dunscar War Memorial in a tribute to Cllr Greenhalgh. Bolton Liberal Democrats described Cllr Greenhalgh’s death as “a very big loss”. In a statement the group said: “He was an incredibly lovely gentleman who, despite polit- ical differences, would always be ready to listen to and work with anyone regardless of polit- ical affiliation. He will be very much missed by all.” • Contined page 2 BOOKS of Condolence were opened in several locations across Bolton for people to write their personal messages fol- lowing Cllr Greenhalgh’s passing. They were placed at Bromley Cross Co-op store, Bolton Parish Church and the town’s Central Library. An online Book of Condolence was also opened and avail- able at https://www.bolton.gov.uk/book_of_condolence The flag at Bolton Town Hall was also flown at half-mast as a sign of respect.
