Alert over moorland fire dangers Fire!ghting: Crews tackle a wild!re (Photo credit: LFRS) FIRE service chiefs have issued a reminder of the legal powers put into place to help prevent devastating wildfires on the moorlands near Bolton. It follows an incident in Riving- ton when fireworks were delib- erately set off causing a small grassland fire. A Lancashire Fire and Res- cue Service spokesperson said: “This highlights why the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), introduced on 21 August 2023, is so important. “Covering parts of Chorley, Dar- wen and Bolton, the order was brought in to help prevent devas- tation to wildlife and reduce the risk of wildfires across our moor- land areas.” The PSPO bans any activities on moorland that pose a serious fire risk, including lighting bar- becues, building or lighting camp- fires or camping stoves, setting off fireworks and releasing night-sky paper lanterns The spokesperson added: “Breaching the PSPO is a criminal offence and could result in a fine of up to £1,000. We’re asking every- one to respect the rules and help protect these beautiful landscapes.” The fire service has already dealt with a number of wildfires in Lancashire this year. Local councils and fire and res- cue services have led the PSPO initiative to protect the moors, including Winter Hill, scene of a major blaze in 2018 that caused widespread destruction. The flames covered seven square miles, with smoke seen for miles and it took 41 days to completely put out the blaze. Bolton, Chorley and Blackburn with Darwen councils have all adopted a PSPO, which together cover a large area of moorland around Horwich and neighbour- ing communities.
