New parents can now register the birth of their child again in Bolton as lockdown restrictions as a result of the coronavirus crisis are eased.
The government stopped all birth registrations in March when it introduced strict lockdown measures to halt the spread of the virus.
The service is strictly by appointment only. Parents need to call the council’s Register Office on 01204 331185 to book an appointment.
Parents will be given a 20-minute slot and sent an email explaining the process and setting out which documents they must bring with them.
The ‘One Stop Shop’ is open for birth registration appointments. Protective screens have been installed and a one-way system is in operation to maintain appropriate social distancing.
Customers will also be asked to use hand sanitiser on entering and leaving the building.
There are a significant number of births waiting to be registered, and residents are urged to be patient as there will be a very high demand for appointments.
The registration of deaths will continue to be carried out by phone.
David Greenhalgh, Bolton Council leader, said the council is pleased it will now be able to register births again.
He said: “This is good news for parents, and we are pleased the government has given councils the green light to start this essential service again.
“Before restarting appointments, we have had to undertake a rigorous risk assessment process and put in place measures to ensure our staff and the public are safe.
“I would ask all parents to please attend their appointment on time so we don’t have more people in the town hall than is necessary.”
People must not come to the One Stop Shop if they have any symptoms of coronavirus or are self-isolating.
Parents are also asked not to bring children to the appointment unless they are unable to organise childcare. All payments must be made by card – no cash can be taken.
