Earlier this week Jeremy Corbyn set out Labour’s plans for a National Education Service that makes education freely available to everyone whatever their age. To see how that announcement would work in practice, Shadow Minister for Youth Affairs Cat Smith MP, and Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Bolton West Julie Hilling, met apprentices at Alliance Learning in Horwich on Thursday.

A Labour government will break down barriers between different types of education and offer the opportunity to retrain at any point in life to help close the gap between the skills people have and the skills our economy needs.

Alliance Learning has been providing training in Bolton for over fifty years.

They spoke to current apprentices who spoke about how the programme works for them and what benefit they get from it.

Cat Smith said: “It was inspiring to visit Alliance Learning to see what great opportunities apprenticeships provide for young people when delivered properly.

“With the right guidance and supportive employers young people can follow a path that is suited to their skills and interests and get a quality job out of it.

“Labour’s National Education Service will ensure that these opportunities are available to all and ensure that apprenticeships are as valued as academic degrees.”

Julie Hilling said: “I was pleased to be able to invite Cat to Horwich today to highlight this important part of our education offer for young people.

“Labour will make Lifelong learning available to everyone no matter their background, employment status, or previous education so that everyone can pursue a career that suits them.

“Places such as Alliance Learning will be vital to making that happen and I’m proud to have such a successful training centre in Bolton West.”
