A trio of healthcare professionals have made significant improvements to a much loved Prestwich care home after completing their Level 5 Higher Apprenticeship qualifications.

Brookfield Residential Care Home Limited provides personal care and accommodation for up to 14 people who require support with mental health needs. Manager Barry Douglas, who has worked in the care home for over 25 years, chose to enrol onto the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People’s Services in order to gain a better understanding of industry regulations.

Barry, who lives in Salford, said, “I have two Level 4 qualifications in Care and Management but I decided that I was at a point in my career where I wanted to up-skill myself. The apprenticeship ran very smoothly and Bury College were a great provider and delivered a great service. As a manager I look after the day-to-day running of the care home including overseeing the finances and conducting risk assessments and I believe the Level 5 qualification has made me more aware of regulations and standards and what I need to do to meet them.”

Inspired by their manager, Senior Support Workers Tracy O’Rourke and Karl Byrne, who have both worked at the care home for 14 years, decided to join Barry in gaining the high level qualification.

Tracy commented, “I love my job and my role but felt that I was ready for a new challenge. Completing the higher apprenticeship as a team meant that we could all support each other and share best practice amongst each other. When my Manager is away I feel that I now have the knowledge to make decisions.”

Karl added, “When the opportunity came round to undertake the high apprenticeship I jumped at the chance. The course was excellent and the units quantified many years’ experience I have working in the healthcare sector. In the future I would like to do further postgraduate study.”
