Bolton ‘most improved’ council for productivity

Bolton Council has been named one of the top 10 most improved local authorities in a national league table.

The ranking of 150 councils has been compiled by national consultancy firm, Impower.

They look at councils across the country and rank who is getting the best results for its citizens and spending money most effectively.

The league table measures performance against outcomes in six different areas: children’s services; older people; all age disability; health and social care interface; housing and homelessness; and waste and recycling.

The index showed Bolton is the fourth most improved council in England for its productivity per pound invested.

Bolton made a substantial improvement in the waste and recycling category.

The waste and recycling team has helped the authority to save more than £4m in waste disposal costs following the roll-out of slim bins in 2016.

The borough’s recycling rate has also increased from 39 to 47 per cent.

Council Leader, Councillor Linda Thomas, said she is extremely proud that the borough has jumped from 92 to 40 in the rankings.

“I’m really pleased that our hard work has been recognised in this national league table. We are looking at better and more efficient ways of working, and this report is testament to the great work the staff are doing,” she said.

“When you look at this against the £155m backdrop of cuts the authority has faced it shows what a great job our staff are doing under difficult circumstances.

“We have more cuts to make, which means efficiency is crucial. Driving up productivity is absolutely one of our top priorities but there is still more to do, and we will continue to look at every pound we spend and do so wisely.”
